Behind the Scenes: Gem Selection
Picking jewelry from the shelves is much like seeing a film for the first time. Or seeing a film in general. We see Jack sweetly leaning off the edge of the Titanic with Rose, or Mark Ruffalo transforming into the Hulk. But what we don’t see are the green and computer screens we all know are necessary for these epic movies that we know and love. When we pick a piece of jewelry it’s already in its beautifully finished state. It’s ready to be worn and subsequently Oscar nominated! Some people focus on what is seen on the screen. This is perfect! We’re designers and we LOVE when people take first, and second, and third glances at jewels, just like you might re watch your favorite movie. But then there are those who love to be behind the scenes! Photographers, musicians, directors, producers, casters, they’re all responsible for making choices that in the end, will add to the beauty of the final production.
Gem selection is much like these choices. Since most designers don’t have direct access to diamond mines and the like, they have to find those special spots that do! The Tuscon Gem show, The New York New Jersey Gem and Jewelry Show are awesome venues because people come from all over with their treasure troves, and you have tons of gems right at your fingertips! But of course there are sellers all over and you just have to find the right one. And when you do, get ready to have your brain explode with beauty and color! Famous stones like diamonds and rubies take the forefront in peoples minds for gemstones, but there are so many different ones in a glorious abundance of color. And as with movies, designers have to pick the ones that work for what they want to do.
Color, cut, hardness, size, all these factors are important when you’re selection a gem. When you see that bracelet or necklace hanging gracefully in the store window it is complete. Yet it holds a whole store inside of it. That stone was picked out of a mass of other stones. And though a designer may wish that the gem show was simply their closet of jewels he or she can go and pick from whenever they so desire, it just isn’t show. Gems are picked and eventually, you have smaller piles of gems you fell, will be a match for the magical ideas bouncing around in your head.
Transformers couldn’t have been made without a colossal amount of computer graphics. Without it, we’d still be watching it in 2-D cartoon animation. And even still, no matter what it all requires work behind the scenes. Just like those fabulous earrings gracing the ears of the cashier ringing up that beautiful dress you just bought. Just like a tour of Hollywood studios, we wanted to give you a glimpse of the behind the scenes action to that labradoite ring your eyeing or a druzy necklace. Know that thoughtful love and care went into not only the design, but the gems used in the design as well. It’s a hard choice, but the right one. And we hope you love them as much as we do.
